Why Pre-Slotted Plastic Nuts Ruin Guitar Tone & Tuning

Factory plastic nuts are molded hollow or filled with microscopic air pockets that dampen string vibrations. Worse, their string slots are cut loose or oversized to accommodate wide manufacturing variations, leading to string binding, pinging noises when tuning, and inaccurate 1st-fret action.

Our Custom Fabrication Process

  1. Material Selection: We carve from dense, unbleached, hard organic cattle bone (or Graph Tech TUSQ upon request). Unbleached bone retains its natural self-lubricating lipids, ensuring strings glide smoothly through slots without binding.
  2. Precise Slot Fitting: The blank is hand-lapped on diamond plates to a tight friction fit within your instrument's nut slot — no wobbling or excess glue.
  3. Proportional String Spacing: Rather than equal-center spacing (which makes the bass strings feel crowded), we calculate proportional string spacing tailored to your neck width and bevel.
  4. Japanese Gauged Slotting: Slots are cut with dedicated Hiroshima files to match your exact string diameters, angled down toward the headstock at the precise string break angle.
  5. Compensated Saddle Intonation: For acoustic saddles, we individually step and angle the contact ridge (especially for the B string and low E) to achieve near-strobe intonation down the entire fingerboard.
