Guitar Hardware Care: Loose Jacks, Stripped Strap Buttons, and Tuner Lubrication
Prevent disastrous guitar drops and stage failures. How to fix stripped strap button screw holes with hardwood dowels, tighten loose jacks with star washers, and lube tuning gears.
Preventing the Most Common Catastrophic Stage Failure
Ask any touring guitar technician what causes the most disastrous guitar injuries, and the answer is almost never a broken string — it is a stripped strap button screw ripping free from dry alder, ash, or mahogany, sending a prized instrument crashing onto concrete.
The Hardwood Dowel Fix (Say No to Toothpicks)
Musicians frequently shove toothpicks and superglue into stripped screw holes. Toothpicks are made from soft white birch or basswood that compresses easily under stress.
The proper lutherie fix:
- Drill out the stripped hole cleanly with a 3/16" brad-point bit.
- Turn a tight-fitting plug of quarter-sawn hard rock maple.
- Glue the plug in place with aliphatic resin wood glue and let cure 24 hours.
- Drill a precision pilot hole matched to the core diameter of your heavy strap lock screw.
