The Physics of Double-Locking Tremolos

A Floyd Rose or Ibanez Edge tremolo is a floating mechanical scale. On one side of the pivot is the forward pull of six tensioned guitar strings (roughly 110 lbs of pull); on the other side is the backward pull of heavy steel counter-springs inside the rear tremolo cavity.

When both forces are in balance, the tremolo baseplate rests perfectly parallel to the guitar body, and the knife edges pivot smoothly on their hardened steel posts.

Step-by-Step Floyd Rose Balancing

  1. Block the Tremolo: When restringing or changing gauges, slip a small wood block behind the tremolo sustain block to lock the baseplate parallel to the body face.
  2. Stretch Strings & Tune: Install and stretch strings until pitch holds firm while the bridge is physically immobilized.
  3. Adjust the Claw Screws: Remove the block. If the bridge sinks into the cavity, the spring claw is too tight (loosen screws). If the bridge lifts upward off the body, the claw is too loose (tighten screws).
  4. Lubricate Knife Edges: Place a tiny dab of synthetic grease or Chapstick on the knife edge contact points to prevent friction wear and ensure flawless return-to-pitch.
