Bass Guitar Setup Fundamentals: Action, Truss Rod, and Punchy Low-End Clarity
Bass strings exert immense tension and wide vibrational envelopes. How to dial in neck relief, bridge saddle radius, low B-string intonation, and pickup distance for punchy low end.
Low-End Physics: Setting Up the Bass Guitar
Electric bass guitars handle fundamental frequencies as low as 41.2 Hz (low E on a 4-string) or 30.8 Hz (low B on a 5-string). Because lower frequencies demand much greater string excursion (the physical swinging ellipse of the string), a bass cannot be set up with the microscopic tolerances of an electric guitar without loud clacking against frets.
Target Bass Setup Tolerances
- Neck Relief: 0.012" to 0.014" measured at the 7th fret under full concert string tension.
- String Height at 12th Fret (Bass Side): 5/64" to 6/64" (2.0 to 2.4mm).
- String Height at 12th Fret (Treble Side): 4/64" to 5/64" (1.6 to 2.0mm).
- Pickup Distance: Maintain at least 6/64" to 8/64" clearance between pickup poles and the low E string to prevent strong Alnico magnets from pulling down on the thick core.
